It's no secret that NBA 2K is the best basketball game franchise. The right time to debut it was NBA 2K, it became an immediate threat to EA Sports' NBA Live which was the highest point on the food chain in the early days. 2K beat Live so often through the years that EA needed to stop playing and restart their series. It's fascinating to see what time NBA 2K was its best. There's more than 20 years worth of entries. These games were rated by Metacritic as the highest rated in its history.

It was clear at this moment that NBA 2K was a world ahead of NBA Live. The 2009 EA Sports game was solid however NBA 2K9 only added to an already impressive legacy. The gameplay was a hit but this also had very well-received elements like Association mode and Street mode. A unique, yet small feature came with the PlayStation 3, where gamers were able to shoot free throws replicating the actual motion of taking a shot. The athlete on the cover was Shaquille Oleal.
