Zopiclone usually should not be taken for more than 7 to 10 days in a row. It should only be used by people who have trouble working during the day due to sleep disturbances.

This drug may also be available under different brand names and/or in many different forms.

A specific name for this medicine may not be available in full forms or approved for all of the conditions discussed here. Also, some variants of this medicine cannot be used for all the conditions discussed here.

How should I use this medicine?

The usual starting dose is 3.75 mg, taken just before bedtime when difficulty sleeping is needed. The recommended adult dose of zopiclone ranges from 3.75 mg to 7.5 mg. The maximum daily dose is 5 mg for seniors, people with reduced liver or kidney function, and others taking certain medications.

Who should not take this medicine?

Do not take this medicine if you:

Are allergic to zopiclone or any of the ingredients in this medicine

  • have myasthenia
  • severe difficulty breathing
  • have a serious illness
  • have apnea

Have experienced complex sleep behaviors such as walking, talking, eating or driving while previously taking zopiclone or other medicines for sleep

What side effects are possible with this medication?

Many medications can cause side effects. A side effect is an unwanted reaction to a medicine when it is taken in normal doses. Side effects are often mild or severe, temporary or permanent.

 

The side effects listed below are not experienced by all people taking this medicine. If you are concerned about side effects, discuss the risks and benefits of this medicine with your doctor.

 

The following side effects have been reported by at least 1% of individuals taking this medicine. Many of those side effects are often managed, and some may go away on their own over time.

Contact your doctor if you experience these side effects and that they are serious or bothersome. Your pharmacist may also be willing to advise you on managing side effects.

Are there other precautions or warnings for this medicine?

Anxiety or restlessness: An increase in daytime anxiety or restlessness has been observed during treatment with zopiclone.

Bad taste in the mouth: Zopiclone may cause a coated tongue, bad breath, or a bitter taste in your mouth. These effects often occur while this medicine is being used.

Changes in behavior: This drug may make symptoms of depression worse, including suicidal thoughts or a desire to harm others. It will also lead to agitated or aggressive behavior. If you experience these symptoms or other behavior changes while taking this medicine, contact your doctor immediately.

Family members or caregivers of individuals taking this medicine should contact the person's doctor immediately if they notice unusual behavior changes.
