History has had a significant influence on the gaming industry for decades now. However, it can be argued that most games are not historically accurate, but they do give some insight into some of the most intriguing events of human history. So, overall, video games did have a significant impact on how millions of people view history, whether critics like it or not. Today, it has become an essential medium of sharing things, and it would be wrong to believe that it is not the appropriate way of learning anything about our past. Historical events’ accuracy can be disputed; what can’t be debated is that the immersion of games opens up an excellent opportunity to introduce millions of people to ideas they would not otherwise have thought of.

Games have been inspired by historical events for a long time now. Medal of Honor to Oregon Trail, many of them have tried to capture the essence of human life’s realities through specific periods in time. Some of the games targeted school students to learn history through a much more immersive and entertaining medium. However, with the progression of technology, historical games evolved to become entertainment rather than just educational software.

The 1990s was the most important era for the evolution of gaming culture. It was in this era that video game consoles were finally available at affordable rates. Then, games were made to take advantage of the growing demand for historically accurate video games. Medal of Honor, 1999, is one such example created by Spielberg to educate the masses about the atrocities of WWII. When it was released, it became the most successful game of all time and inspired many more games like itself.

Age of Empires is also a great example that teaches about accurate historical events and allows the players to participate in one of the most important battles that were ever fought. In doing so, a typical player learns a ton of things about our ancestors and gets a much more detailed perspective of what our world is like. Assassins Creed, too, does the same thing; however, it is not as historically accurate as of the Age of Empires. But the historical buildings and other specific events have inspired a lot of things in the game.

History has indeed been a great motivation for some of the most popular games that we know today. The creators, too, deserve a lot of credit for taking care of historical accuracies and making the events as close to the real-life event as possible. Some of the games do take liberties to make the game more entertaining, so the historical accuracy of such games does suffer. But not all games are made with the motivation to teach something, and drawing inspiration from historical events is not wrong. The critics are right about questioning the games that lack accuracy when they are made with the motivation of enlightening others but not with the ones that are made only to entertain. Lastly, video games have proved that they are not always made only for mindless entertainment, but they are sometimes quite educational and thought-provoking.
