If you're looking for a cheap Android phone, there are a lot of them to choose from. Wi-Fi, 3G, and Bluetooth are all included in the Samsung Galaxy Europa (GT-i5500), as well as 140MB of internal memory and a 2.8-inch touchscreen.

With its gleaming black fascia and metallic frame, as well as the snappy silver Google logo on the back, the Europa appears classy enough at first glance. It does, however, feel a little flimsy once you get it in your hands. On the plus side, it only weighs 102g, so you'll barely notice it in your bag, and it measures 56 x 108 x 12.3mm, so it'll easily fit into your pocket. The glossy back panel is a fingerprint magnet and a dust magnet, but the asymmetrically curved back makes it comfortable to hold.

You'll also find the standard Android buttons, such as Menu, Home, Back, and Search, as well as dial and end keys, encircling a Confirm button.  The handset has a volume up and down button on the side, but it's in an awkward location, so you'll have to change your usual phone-holding position to use it.  The Micro-USB connector is located just beneath the volume buttons, and it can be used to charge the phone via computer or the included power adaptor.

The 2.8-inch TFT-LCD ST7789V   display is on the small side, with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels.  This means that while you can easily watch a video clip or two, the images are soft, so you wouldn't want to watch anything too taxing, and you wouldn't be able to sit through an entire TV show.  Surprisingly, the touchscreen is capacitive rather than resistive, as one might expect on a low-cost smartphone.  Samsung's TouchWiz UI is fast and responsive on the Europa.  Similarly, navigating the menu screens is a breeze, especially if you're already familiar with the Android user interface.

When you go to the apps screen, you'll find all of the usual suspects, such as the calendar, camera, maps, browser, YouTube, and Android Market. Samsung Apps has its own icon, as Samsung continues to offer its own take on apps. The Samsung app store was empty on our review device, but if other devices are any indication, it won't have much to offer.

The Europa also comes with the Write and Go universal text composer, which allows you to type the text first and then choose the destination, whether it's a text message, a calendar entry, or a status update. An FM radio with RDS and a 3.5mm jack on the top edge of the handset are among the other features.
