In Avatar, bending is an important aspect that makes it world-building even more compelling and captivating. Without a fictional historical and cultural basis for different bending arts, the story would never have resonated with the fans the way it did. Throughout the series Avatar: The Last Airbender and its spinoffs, viewers are introduced to several bending masters who would portray their impressive skills to entertain them. However, it is strange that some great benders were never shown in action, but only their feats were discussed. Today we look at some of these characters whom fans would love to see in future Avatar media like novels, comics, or animated series. 

Jesa

Avatar’s creators have taken care of every little detail of the show, which means that there is a backstory to every character and event, making the show even more fascinating. Kyoshi novels revealed the origins of the Avatar Kyoshi’s costume, makeup, and war fan lies through a story of her mother, Jesa. However, Jesa was an airbender, but she fell in love with Hark, who was criminally inclined. She went rogue, and they together started their own company called the Flying Opera Company. They pretended to be actors and looted people of the Earth Kingdom while they were traveling. However, her morally compromised work eventually began to affect her powers, but she made up for it with war fans, who later became Kyoshi’s trademark. 

Azulon

Since every single member of the Fire Nation royal family is immensely skilled and powerful, it is not surprising that Fire Lord Azulon, too, was just as scary as other Fire Lords. Azulon became the Fire Lord at the young age of 20, and it is said that he was as talented as her granddaughter Azula. He was trained by his father, the Fire Lord Sozin, who was so talented that he could drain heat from a volcano. 

Under his father’s mentorship, Azulon grew up to become a mighty warrior. He was responsible for pushing the Earth Kingdom eastward in the Hundred Year War. Moreover, he also ensured the devastation of the Southern Water Tribe. Although he was a scary warrior with extraordinary bending prowess, he remembered more for his military accomplishments. Despite being one of the most influential figures of the Avatar World, the fans rarely got to see him.

Izumi

The Fire Nation royal family is known for their inhumanity and barbarism, but not all the members were cruel. When Zuko became the Fire Lord, he decided to end the meaningless and brutal Hundred Year War, which brought an era of peace and brotherhood. After Izumi took control of the kingdom after Zuko, she, too, ensured that peace continued to prosper. Unfortunately, the Legend of Korra. She hardly focuses on the Fire Nation; therefore, the details of her rule are a bit hazy. Viewers don’t even know for sure whether Izumi is a bender or not. 

Although she might not be as impressive as other characters from the original series, Izumi still has to play a crucial role in the Fire Nation. Since every royal family member has been skilled and powerful, it would be surprising if Izumi could not firebend.

Oma Shu

The original Avatar series was always about the possibility of the existence of a bigger world that was beyond perception. The episode “The cave of Two Lovers” stoked fans’ imagination by portraying Omashu’s creation myth. Aang and Katara, while running through the Kolau Mountains, found out that the tunnels that they got lost into were formed by Oma and Shu, the two lovers who gave Omashu its name. They were unfortunately from two different cities which were always at war with each other making it impossible for them to meet. They have to move mountains to see each other. Oma and Shu made the network of tunnels to avoid being caught. After Shu passed away, Oma destroyed the warring factions to unify them.

Avatar Salai

Although Oma’s impressive effort to build tunnels through mountains is mind-boggling, it is still nowhere near what the Avatars in the series could achieve. Every single one of them has received a story about them. Avatars Korra, Kyoshi, and Aang all got prolonged arcs while Roku, Kuruk, Szeto, and Yangcher Wan, who were not as lucky, still had biographies about them. Therefore, it is surprising that resources are scarce about Avatar Salai. 

In the Rise of Kyoshi, Salai is referred to as the greatest Avatar in history, but strangely, no one knows what nations he comes from. Apart from the mention in the Kyoshi novels, there is no other mention of Salai’s life. Every single Avatar has a captivating backstory, so if prequels in the future delves into Salai’s past experiences, it would be interesting to watch.
