What exactly is VMware and how does it function?

VMware, a provider of cloud computing and virtualization software, is located in Palo Alto (Calif.). VMware, a subsidiary Dell Technologies, was founded in 1998. EMC Corporation acquired VMware in 2004. Dell Technologies later bought EMC in 2016. VMware's virtualization technologies

VMware server virtualization allows multiple virtual machines (VMs), to be run on the same physical machine by installing a hypervisor on the server. Each VM can run its operating system (OS), so multiple OSes are possible on one physical server. All VMs running on the same physical server share the same resources such as RAM and networking. VMware has added support for containerized workloads in Kubernetes clusters to its hypervisor in 2019. Infrastructure teams can manage these types of workloads in the same manner as virtual machines. DevOps teams are able to deploy containers the same way they used to.
VMware was founded by Scott Devine and Mendel Rosenblum. Edward Wang, Edouard Bugnion, and Diane Greene. The company launched its first product, VMware Workstation, in 1999. In 2001, VMware ESX was released.
Patrick Gelsinger is VMware's current CEO. He was appointed in 2012.

VMware products

VMware products include virtualisation and networking, security management tools, software defined data center software, and storage software.

Cloud infrastructure and data center

VMvare Sphere, VMware's virtualization product suite, is what you call it. VMware vSphere (previously known as VMware Infrastructure) includes the following:
  • ESXi
  • vCenter Server
  • vSphere Client
  • vMotion
vSphere 6.7 is the most recent version as of April 2018. It is available in three editions, Standard, Enterprise Plus, and Platinum. There are two three-server packages, Essentials Plus and Essentials Plus, that are targeted at small and medium-sized companies.
Customers can use VMware cloud on AWS to host a cluster of vSphere hosts using vSAN or NSX in Amazon's data center. They can then run their workloads there and manage them with the well-known VMware tools.

Security and networking

VMware NSX, a virtual networking and security product, was created in 2012 when VMware bought Nicera. NSX allows administrators to virtualize network components. This allows them to create, deploy, and configure virtual networks through software, rather than hardware. The hypervisor has a software layer that allows administrators to split a physical network into multiple virtual ones.
The latest version of the product, NSXT Data Center, allows network virtualization to be added to both ESXi (a hypervisor) and KVM (a server). Containerized workloads can also be virtualized and protected in Kubernetes clusters. NSX-T Data Center offers Network Function Virtualization. This allows functions like a firewall, loadbalancer, and VPN to be run within the virtualization software stack.
VMware vRealize network InsightThis network operations management tool allows admins to plan microsegmentation, and monitor the health of VMware NSX. VRealize Network Insight uses technology from the 2016 acquisition of Arkin by VMware. VRealize Network Insight gathers information from the NSX manager. It also displays errors, which can be used to troubleshoot NSX environments.

SDDC platform

VMware cloud foundation is an integrated software platform that bundles vSphere vSAN, VMware NSX and VMware NSX. It can be accessed through the SDDC Manager. Administrators can either deploy the bundle as a private cloud on their premises or as a service in a public cloud. Administrators can immediately provision applications without waiting for storage or network.

Storage and availability

VMware vSAN, a software-based storage option, is integrated into vSphere. It pools disk space from multiple ESXi hosts, and provision it using smart policies such as thin provisioning, protection limits, and erasure coding. It can be integrated with vSphere High Availability for increased storage and compute availability.
VMware Site Recovery Manager is a disaster management software that allows administrators to create recovery plans and have them automatically executed in the event of a failure. Site Recovery Manager allows administrators to automate failover and failback of VMs. SRM integrates with NSX in order to protect network and security policies for migrated VMs.
VMware vCloud NVFIt is a platform for virtualizing network functions that allows service providers to use virtualized applications from different vendors to manage their network functions. NFV offers the same benefits as cloud and virtualization to communications service providers that used to rely on hardware.

Cloud management platform

The vRealise suite is a collection of software that allows users to manage hybrid clouds. The vRealize suite includes vRealize Operations to monitor, vRealize log Insight for centralized logging and vRealize Automation to automate data centres. vRealize Business is for cloud cost management.
This bundle allows administrators to deploy and manage VMs across multiple cloud platforms or hypervisors from a single console. VMware Tanzu was released in 2019. It allows customers to create containerized apps, run enterprise Kubernetes, and manage Kubernetes.

Virtual desktop infrastructure

VMware Horizon allows organizations the ability to run Windows desktops from either their data centre or VMware Cloud on AWS. This eliminates the need for desktops to be placed and managed at work and centralizes security and management of the environment. It can be integrated with the VMware products App Volumes, Dynamic Environment Manager and Windows Desktop Manager for application delivery.

Management of enterprise mobility and digital workspace

Workspace One allows administrators to manage mobile devices, cloud-hosted virtual desktops, and applications using a single management platform that is available on premises or in the cloud. Workspace ONE includes VMware AirWatch and Horizon Air, as well as Identity Manager.
Identity manager is an identity-as-a-service product that offers single sign-on (SSO) capabilities for web, cloud and mobile applications. Based on policies, Identity Manager allows SSO access from any device to any application.
VMware AirWatch, an enterprise mobility management software platform, allows administrators to deploy and manage mobile devices and applications.

Personal desktop

VMware Workstationis the company's first product. It allows users to create and manage VMs on a single Windows, Linux or Macintosh desktop or laptop. These VMs can be run simultaneously on the same machine. Each VM runs its OS, such as Windows or Linux. This allows users to run Windows on Linux machines or vice versa with the native OS.
VMware software, similar to VMware Workstation, virtualizes Windows and Linux OSes on Mac computers.

VMware Benefits

VMware products offer many benefits:
  • Security based on zero trust model is more secure than containers like Kubernetes.
  • Better provisioning of resources and applications
  • Data center management simplified;
  • Data center systems are more efficient and agile.

VMware's Drawbacks

There are some drawbacks to VMware products:
  • High licensing fees
  • Some people believe there are better Hyper-V or Xen hypervisor options;
  • Several bugs and lack of support when Oracle products are used together;
  • Hardware compatibility issues, not all hardware works with VMware.

Alternative virtual machines

Other hypervisors that VMware vSphere can be used in the data center include:
  • Microsoft Hyper-V
  • Citrix XenServer
  • LinuxKVM
  • Oracle VM Server
  • Virtuozzo
  • Proxmox Ve
  • Red Hat Virtualisation
Alternatives to VMware Workstation for personal desktop use include:
  • VirtualBox
  • Parallels
  • QEMU
  • Bhyve
