Welwyn Garden City Town Centre development

Hertfordshire County Council in partnership with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and supported by Welwyn Garden City BID are developing a scheme to enhance the area around Welwyn Garden City town centre.

Proposed Project:

The aim of the scheme is to reduce traffic circulation in the town centre, improve the environment for pedestrians and cyclists and to enhance the experience for people using the town centre.

Upcoming works: December 3rd to 16th 2018

The proposed design solution requires amendment of the storm water system to accommodate raised pedestrian access and changes to the kerbs and footways.

We'll begin by cleaning the existing drains and pipes to make sure that they're clear and can be CCTV surveyed to check that they are in good working order. We expect that the initial cleaning process will create some noise but we don't expect this to last very long in one area.

For safety, we'll need to close certain roads (though there will still be pedestrian access to residential properties and businesses).

Closures are scheduled for the following nights (10pm-5am):

Mon 3 Dec - Church Road from Osborne Way to Fretherne Road
Tues 4 Dec - Fretherne Road from Church Road to Howardsgate
Wed 5 Dec - Parkway at Howardsgate
Thurs 6 Dec and Fri 7 Dec - Stonehills
Mon 10 Dec to Wed 12 Dec - Howardsgate
Thurs 13 Dec and Fri 14 Dec - Wigmores north
Possible additional closures (6.30pm-5am):

Sun 9 Dec
Sun 16 Dec

Construction:

We expect to start work on the scheme in Spring 2019.

We'll do everything we can to minimise disruption during construction. All businesses will keep access to their premises.
