It’s recently been confirmed that one very famous dog is being re-homed, and doesn’t even need to be house-trained: It’s Spot, the weird robotic dog created by Boston Dynamics for tasks ranging from factories to oil rigs.

According to reports, Boston Dynamics will be sold for a price tag of $921 million and the buyer is none other than the Hyundai Motor Company.

But… why? Spot has been known for its abilities across a wide range of applications – including, recently, triaging possible COVID patients at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Some outlets, including Engadget, speculate that the robotics-heavy Hyundai may have aspirations to use Spot within its factories.

One recent application by Ford tasked the $75,000 robots with mapping out an old facility to help improve visualization as they worked to update the plant. But that’s just one of many opportunities that could be on the horizon. Back in November, when rumors of Hyundai’s interest in Boston Dynamics first started buzzing, CNet’s Road Show suggested that the car maker’s interest in this type of robotics might be related to its Elevate “walking car” concept.

Elevate was first unveiled at CES in 2019, and it’s basically a vehicle with robotic mobility features. The idea behind this technology is that first responders could gain better access to people in trouble, as the vehicle can travel at highway speeds but also climb walls or step over gaps of up to five feet.
